In our workshop with Abi for type, we looked at fonts and how they carry different meanings. We also looked at how different fonts compare to each other and I found that Serif is a guy who made a font where all the letters just have a tail and that his son got sick of the tail so he chopped it off and made Sans Serif. We traced and drew our own copy of Sans Serif and it was fun and a lot of work and a lot of steps and strokes.

We then took our knowledge to Adobe Illustrator and added text to our IKON images. I, like last time, struggled and could only manage having a row of O’s over my partner’s picture. But at least I learnt how to add those O’s and use them in a swatch.

I really wanted a good word to put over my image and decided after much debate over space and rugby themed words, that I would just stick with Jack as apparently ‘touchdown’ isn’t used in British rugby. I wanted the font to relate to space and looked at space fonts on Google Images and noticed they all have the letters very wide and spaced out without any sharp curves.

So I imitated this font design for my work. I looked around on illustrator and the only font they had as a similar option was called Acier BAT but this font wasn’t what I had in mine as I didn’t like the filled and clear parts in the letters. I didn’t want to download a font from the internet because it seemed too easy, so I just hand drew all the letters with my trackpad. This was difficult as drawing curves on Illustrator isn’t that easy so I had to try more than once and draw lines then bend them into place.
