From our postmodernism lecture, I was most interested in Wolfgang Weingart as typography has been a long time interest of mine.

Wolfgang Weingart is a designer and teacher known for his typography. He was born and studied in Germany. He took part in an apprenticeship as a typesetter and eventually began working in Switzerland. His work at the time, had Swiss influences but Weingart is known for having “a spontaneity and deliberate carelessness that transcended the precepts of Swiss design”. Weingart said he “was motivated to stretch the typeshop’s capabilities to the breaking point”. (Burton, P, no date)

Weingart’s design process was simple and when he taught, he would tell his students to “consider the appropriate size, weight and style of the letters they wanted to use” If he felt that something from their choices didn’t feel right, they would have to start again. (Burton, P, no date)

Weingar was an editor for ‘Typographische Monatsblätter’ in 1970 to 1988 and created posters, cover designs and call-for-entry designs for the magazine. He was constantly experimenting with different ways to make images, he would use a repro camera to stretch, cut and blur features in his type. He would overlap colours from 1980 to 1983, when he stopped doing black and white work from 1976 to 1979. (Burton, P, no date)

Typography in 2018 gave more spotlight to hand-written fonts, variable fonts which are letters that vary in their width, weight, height and slant, (Carter, D, 2018) and Serifs made a popular return. (Cousins, C, 2018) Some say that animated typography will be trendy in 2019, and so will stacked text. Colours, highlights, cutouts and overlays, layering and gradients are also expected to be popular next year. (Cousins, C, 2018)
